Grimentz, in the French-speaking part of the Swiss canton of Valais, is an ancient picturesque village of cobbled streets and narrow paths between dark wooden chalets and barns on staddle stones. In summer the cows are taken up to the pastures and the hills are literally filled with the sound of music from their cowbells. In the winter Grimentz becomes a picture-postcard of the traditional ski village surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The local commune has strictly-enforced building regulations which insist that any new developments are in keeping with the old style of the village.
Although small, the village does have everything one needs for a holiday visit including:-
- two small supermarkets (one of which is a Co-op), a butcher and two bakeries/patisseries
- three ski/mountain bike hire shops
- 5 hotels which have restaurants plus a Pizzeria and a Creperie
- several shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs
There are several bars in the village:-
- Chez Florioz at the base of the pistes serves great lunches (speciality very thin-based pizzettas) and is the après-ski bar with live music.
- The Alpina has a lively apres-ski scene with outdoor drinking and live music.
- Le Villageois deli has a lovely wine bar.
- Pub Domino is at the lower end of the village.
- Le Country in the centre of the village is the young persons' bar!
There are 3 mountain restaurants, all with both indoor and outdoor areas -
- Bob's Burger Bar next to the Snow Park is open in winter only and serves great burgers, soups, salads, sandwiches and anything with chips.
- L'Etable de Marais on the piste is an atmospheric mountain restaurant open in winter and summer serving home-made local meat and cheese-based dishes plus soups and pasta. A jazz band plays there from time to time.
- the Bendolla restaurant at the top of the main lift station is open in winter and summer with large areas for indoor and outdoor eating and a huge variety of dishes. The main restaurant is self-service but there is a smaller a la carte area.
- The Bendolla restaurant also has an enclosed seating area for people who wish to bring their own picnics.
For fine dining in the area, the Michelin-starred Terminus restaurant in Sierre in the valley plus the Bella Tola restaurant in St. Luc are both well worth a trip.
For non-skiers or non-trekkers there is always plenty going on in the village:-
- guided walks to look at flora and fauna.
- historical tours.
- visits to the winter stabling for the cows.
- traditional markets.
The tourist office organizes some sort of activity for pretty well every day of the week during the winter and summer seasons.
